MIT Lincoln Laboratory develops photon-counting image sensors for lidar, passive imaging, wavefront sensing,
and communications. These sensors are based on hybridizing or 3D integrating custom arrays of Geiger-mode
avalanche photodiodes (GmAPDs) with all-digital CMOS circuits. This presentation reviews ongoing technology
development work at the Laboratory on three fronts: (1) Silicon and InGaAsP/InP GmAPD arrays, (2) Novel
readout circuits architectures for lidar and photon-starved passive imaging, and (3) 3D integration and rapid
prototyping techniques.
